Metal working cutting tools

are used in almost every production shop all over the world. The user of a technical dictionary of this vast technical field asks not only for more or less equivalent translations of the terms — he expects accurate definitions.

It is the purpose of this book to assist the user in finding accurate translations of technical terms with the help of the illustrations and the arrangement of its contents.
The drawing is the language of technicians all over the world, it says them more than thousend words.

Therefore this new work uses the drawing as a connecting link to all languages. It is the base for the definition of the object in five languages. The translations of the corresponding tool and its parts are grouped around every drawing.
The result is a dictionary of cutting tools whose practical value reaches from the use as a reference book in the own mother tongue to far beyond the limits of the five indicated languages. Many of the details and terms may not be found in other dictionaries. I wish to make acknowledgement of assistance to all who have helped in this task, especially to Mr. F. and A. Rubin, Madrid, and Mr. R. L. Kienwald, Milan, for their cooperation in the preparation of the Spanish and italian text. In conclusion I wish to express my appreciation and thanks to the editor "Carl Hanser Verlag" for its difficult task in preparing this edition.

The author would welcome any suggestions, observations and criticisms from readers. They will be taken into consideration for a later edition.

INTRODUCTION

The first part of this dictionary groups in 12 chapters the technical terms of more than 650 basic cutting tools with 1263 illustrations. The general characteristics such as shaft types, tooth forms, cutting edges etc., which are listed at the beginning of the chapters, will enable the user to form further tool designations by combining them with the basic tools. At the bottom of each page the Standards of the described tools are listed. The user may add new standards or change them when necessary.

The second part contains, separated for each language, an alphabeti­cal index. According to DIN 5007 the german index arranges ii = ae, 6 = oe and u = ue.

Although technical translations require not only a good linguistic knowledge but also a good technical knowledge—a fact often not recognized—the arrangement of this book together with the illus­trations will assist even the less experienced user in securing exact translations, provided he has a certain basic linguistic and technical knowledge.
