What is maths?
Maths is short for mathematics (people in America say "math"). It is the study of numbers, quantities and shapes. This book divides maths into five main sections. If you'd like to find out about a whole subject, you can turn to the section or pages and read straight through. If you just want to look up a particular word or fact, use the index at the back of the book to find out which page or pages to look at.
Numbers and number facts
Tells you about different sorts of numbers. It shows how they are the building blocks of mathematical calculations and tools you need for everyday life.
Calculations
Shows you lots of different ways to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers: in your head, on paper, or using a calculator.
Shape and space
Gives you information about many shapes and solids, what makes them the way they are, and how you can change and move them in different ways.
Measures
