PREFACE

This Bulgarian course has been designed taking into account the. tra-ditional requirements of language teaching, enriched by some new aspects, which have proved to be successful in the accumulated teaching experience. The course contains word formation and lexicon material and considerable attention is focused on lexical exercises. The grammar of the laryuage is presented bu means of tables and lexico-grammatical paradigms to facilitate learning throught practice.

The course consists of two parts. Part One is divided into sections of 'Phonetics', 'Morphology' and 'Syntax'.

The Phonetics section presents in accessible form the characteristic features of the sounds comprising the phonetic system of Bulgarian. The exercises in this section are intended to help learners clarify to themselves and internalise the specific norms of correct speech and spelling (orthography).

In the Morphology section although the grammar units are the organizing core of each lesson, other criteria have also been taken into consideration. Besides the grammar patterns, each of the lessons includes a text, lexical exercises, grammar exercises, a dialogue, word formation and vocabulary material. The aim of the basic text, consistent with the practical vocabulary of colloquial speech, is to introduce the new grammatical items to be learned. Each lesson contains lexical and grammar exercises, which could be done either in class or assigned for home-practice. The extensive range and variety of lexical exercises is intended to provide ample practice for internalising the new vocabulary items and reinforcing previously learned lexical and phrasal units. Grammar exercises are not only oriented towards the respective grammatical unit of the lesson, but also provide a lot of repetition and ensure the steady consolidation of previously covered grammatical points. The dialogues in each lesson help to get a permanent hold on the material and to ensure the practical application of the language for communicative purposes. Some pragmatic knowledge and information on the word-formation patterns and the semantic structure of frequently occurring polysemantic words should facilitate their correct and appropriate usage.

The Syntax section presents brief outlines of the most important syntactic categories. The basic texts are predominantly excerpts from fiction. The exercises in this section are aimed at helping the students internalise and practically monitor the rules of sentence generation in Bulgarian.
The textbook is designed to serve as a systematic course of one-year study in a non-native language environment but could be used as a self-study manual as well. Learning provided by the course should give a chance to get a deep insight and understanding of the characteristic features of the Bulgarian grammatical system.

The course includes a Bulgarian-English vocabulary of all the lexical units with brief grammatical characteristics of the words which have some morphologic peculiarities.
Being quite universal, the textbook of Bulgarian for English-speaking Learners could be used by a broad range of people interested in studying the Bulgarian language.
