Preface

A new edition of a book is expected to emphasize the advance of knowledge in the field covered. However, insofar as sewerage and sewage treatment are concerned, in the words of the Committee on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment of the American Society of Civil Engineers: ¹ "Changes in sewer design and construction rarely occur with suddenness and almost never with the fanfare that sometimes accompanies new developments in sewage treatment processes and in sludge disposal methods. Sewerage changes are evolutionary. . . ." The eighth edition marks a signal development in the life of this book, which first appeared in 1922. This development is the association of a new author in its preparation. The advent of the younger man should revitalize the text, eliminate deadwood, and assist in main­taining a close sympathy with the needs of the student and the younger engineer.

Changes from the seventh edition are scattered throughout the text. Each paragraph has been reviewed and where change has not been justified none has been made. All chapters show effects of review and reconsideration. Although new methods, new processes, and new standards continue to develop, their inclusion cannot be permitted to increase the size of the book. Hence, additions are balanced by dele­tions, as much as feasible. Easily observable additions include copious references to the literature. The book thus becomes some­what of a review of literature and provides an open sesame to the researcher in any particular corner of the field. An attempt has been made to use the units of expression recommended by the Committee of the Federation of Sewage and Industrial Wastes Associations² as far as current practice will permit.   Time will be required to make the complete adoption of such units general in practice. Answers to about one-half of the problems have been included. If experience follows that of a previous edition in which answers were included, there will be an increase of correspondence with users unable to check the published answer. The chapter on industrial wastes has been re­vamped by placing industrial processes in alphabetical order, and by the addition of some processes. The growing emphasis on oxidation ponds is recognized by devoting added space to the subject, and the increased attention in practice to sludge treatment and disposal has been recognized by increased emphasis in the book.

Deletions, to provide space, have been made by limiting the refer­ences to dates subsequent to 1940, insofar as may have been consid­ered reasonable. References given will lead to earlier publications so that the field is open to the searcher wishing to pursue the subject more deeply. Some of the discussion on construction has been short­ened, as, for example, explosives and blasting. Despite its importance in sewerage this subject can be dealt with more thoroughly in a text devoted to general civil engineering construction.

Illustrations have been changed so that almost half differ from the previous edition. Pertinent data have been placed in the tables to aid in the preparation and solution of problems in the book and to aid in the design of sewers and of sewage treatment plants.

It is noted that the preface of the previous edition was dated Feb­ruary, 1953. The closing words to that preface are equally applicable today. It said: "Frequent revision of this book is necessary, there­fore, to keep the student and the practitioner informed of the latest practices in the field."
