Seen through the eyes of their teacher, who finds himself alienated by their xenophobia and nascent Fascism, the actions of the boys as they undergo military training at their local cadet camp acquire a grim significance. No evidence of individuality is tolerated and, in the tensions that develop, a murder is committed. In the trial which follows, the teacher becomes increasingly convinced that those accused are innocent. With the implacable, fishlike eyes of the real murderer watching him, he is torn between the necessity for justice and his own fear of admitting the truth.
