This word book has been long awaited by lovers of the SCRABBLE® Brand crossword games, and Scrabble® Crossword Game Players, Inc., a subsidiary of Selchow & Righter Co., is very pleased to present it to them. All who have looked for a guide to settle challenges that arise in the course of play now have one of authority. This is the dictionary of first reference for all official SCRABBLE® Players crossword game tournaments.

It is important to remember that The Official Scrabble® Players Dictionary was edited solely with this limited purpose in mind. It is not intended to serve as a general dictionary of English; thus, such important features of general dictionaries as definitions of multiple senses, pronunciation respeliings, etymologies, and usage labels are omitted.

The plan of the dictionary and the policies that governed its editing were developed under the direction of Scrabble® Crossword Game Players, Inc. The finished manuscript was prepared for the typesetter and the dictionary was seen into print by members of the Editorial Department of Merriam-Webster Inc. under the supervision of James G. Lowe, Associate Editor.

The detailed organization and special features of the dictionary are explained in the Introduction which immediately follows. It should be read with care by all who use the dictionary.
